International Pancake racers can train at no cost at SCCC
Racers must enter by Jan. 29 to qualify
It’s a chance to take part in a unique event, make a bit
of history and have a great time. On Feb. 5, the women of Liberal
will once again don headscarves and aprons, grab skillets and
pancakes and compete against the women of Olney, England.
To add a bit of extra incentive this year, the Seward County
Community College Wellness Center is once again offering International
race contestants the chance to work out for free at the Wellness
Center.
To take advantage of the free work-out offer, contestants must
turn in completed entry applications by Jan. 29.
Qualified racers may train at the Wellness Center any time the
center is open and may attend as many times as they wish until Pancake Day, according to Kelly Cook, Director of
Wellness and Aquatics at SCCC. The Center offers a wife variety
of training options.
“Here at the Wellness Center we have five treadmills, six
bicycles, a step mill, three elliptical machines, a 1,000-square
foot free weight area, and a 25-yard natatorium to round out anyone's
balanced cross training program,” Cook said.
The Feb. 5th International Pancake Day Race will be the 59th time
for the women of the two towns to compete, and all women who are
ages 18 and over and residents of Liberal are invited to enter.
In addition, a Men’s Pacer Race is open to all men ages
18 and older, and a women’s Last Chance race is open to
women ages 50 and older.
Men’s Pacer contestants and women’s Last Chance contestants
are not required to be Liberal residents.
Entries will be accepted beginning Tuesday, Jan. 15. The number
of spaces available in each race is limited, so those interested
are encouraged to sign up soon.
Race applications may be picked up at the Liberal Tourist Information
Center, 1 Yellow Brick Road, across the street from the Coronado
Museum. The deadline to enter to qualify for free training at
the Wellness Center is 5 p.m. Jan. 29. Race applications will
be accepted after that date if space remains in the races, but
those entering after Jan. 29 will not be able to work out for
free. Entrants will be given information about attending the Wellness
Center at the time they return completed race applications.
Deadline to enter the International Race is January 31, 2008.
