Pancake Day recipe contest to feature major prizes
Contest open to area residents

Judges from Sysco Foods and Ben E. Keith make their selections from an array of tempting dishes at the 2006 Pancake Day Cooking and Recipe Contest. Anyone age 12 and older living within a 70-mile radius of Liberal may enter the contest, which is set for Feb. 2.

The fifth annual Pancake Day cooking and recipe contest, set for Feb. 2, will award cash and prizes valued at more than $400. The contest is open to anyone age 12 or older living within a 70-mile radius of Liberal, Kansas.

Creative cooks can come up with any type of dish this year, ranging from main dishes to dessert, and, of course, any and all variations on pancakes. The recipe must include “Old Muffin Factory” pancake mix as a main ingredient and it must be an original creation.
Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place, with entries judged on taste, originality and creativity, use of product and appetite appeal.

First prize is $400 in cash and merchandise. Second prize is $100 in cash and merchandise and third prize is $50 in cash and merchandise.

Judging the contest will be personnel from Sysco Food Services of Oklahoma and Ben E. Keith Fine Foods of Amarillo.

Those interested in entering may pick up entry forms at the Liberal Convention and Tourism Bureau, One Yellow Brick Road. The deadline to enter is 5 p. m., Friday, Feb. 1. Contestants will be given a copy of the contest rules and the official pancake mix when they register. Entrants will prepare their dishes and bring them to the Knights of Columbus Hall, located in downtown Liberal, Saturday morning, Feb. 2. Entries will be accepted from 9:30-10:00 a.m. The public is invited to attend and to sample the dishes after winners are announced.
